Andrew Garbarino made it only 3 days into his term in Congress before turning his back on President Trump, the Republican Party, and more importantly, his constituents.
In an official press release from his office on January 13th, 2021, Mr. Garbarino blamed then-President Donald J. Trump for the events that occurred at the Capitol a week earlier. Representing NY-02 – a district with more than a majority of the constituency supporting Donald Trump for reelection in 2020 – Garbarino not only failed to represent the interests of his constituents, but he also failed to represent the truth of the situation.
The truth of the matter is that the events that occurred at the Capitol took place without any directive from President Trump. In fact, in his speech made that same morning to a crowd of supporters, he told the thousands of patriots this: "I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard".1 In no way did he incite or encourage the actions of the protesters that day, and he had made it a point to tell his supporters to be peaceful in their demonstrations.
Later on, President Trump – publicly – urged the people at the Capitol to go home and to go in peace: “I know your pain, I know you’re hurt. But you have to go home now, we have to have peace. We have to have law and order, we have to respect our great people in law and order.”2
Mr. Garbarino: once again you fail to realize that your position in Congress is to be a mouthpiece for your constituents, not a pulpit to draw power from and push your own agenda!
